Bio

My practice combines elements of sculpture with painting. I am interested in the play between the fake and the real, between pastiche and authenticity, and in exploring how the frame functions to embellish, contradict or emphasize the illusionism within a painted image. This series, entitled Against Nature, is comprised of paintings inspired by Joris Karl Huysman’s novel “À Rebours,” and Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” and deals with ideas of fakery, semblance and masquerade. Through painting, I draw together genres of visual art and literature to explore the space between high art and kitsch.
